What an “X GIF” really is
The word GIF describes the way an animation behaves on X, not the file format delivered to your browser. When somebody uploads a traditional GIF, X converts it into a short, silent video and serves that video as MP4. It still autoplays and loops in the timeline, so it looks like a GIF to the viewer, but the underlying media is modern video.
That conversion is useful. Traditional GIF compression stores every frame with a tiny colour palette and no modern inter-frame compression. A few seconds of motion can become surprisingly large while gradients look rough and edges shimmer. MP4 can represent the same movement with millions of colours, smoother playback, and a fraction of the bandwidth.

How to save X GIFs on each device
iPhone and iPad
Safari places downloaded MP4 files in the Files app. Open Files → Browse → Downloads to find the animation. If you want it beside your camera videos, open the file, tap Share, and choose Save Video. It will then appear in Photos and in the media picker used by most social and editing apps.
Android
Chrome and most Android browsers save directly to the Downloads folder. Tap the completed-download notification to open it, or use Files, My Files, or your phone's file manager later. Gallery apps commonly index the folder automatically; if the clip does not appear immediately, open it once from Files or refresh the gallery.
Windows, Mac, Chromebook, and Linux
The MP4 behaves like a normal browser download and goes to your configured Downloads folder. Enable “ask where to save each file” in browser settings if you prefer to organise animations into a project folder as you collect them.
What happens to quality, sound, and looping?
X GIF posts are normally silent because that is part of the platform's animated GIF behaviour. The downloaded MP4 does not lose a hidden audio track—there usually was no audio to begin with. If a post plays with sound, X treats it as a video and the audio remains in the file.
The animation is not resized or given a watermark here. You receive the rendition X makes available. A standalone player may stop when it reaches the end because MP4 does not force looping at the file level. When you add the clip to a post, presentation, message, or editor, choose that platform's loop or repeat option if continuous playback matters.

Troubleshooting an X GIF download
The link returns no animation
Confirm that the URL points to the individual status, not a profile, search page, or media tab. Open it in a private browser window: if the post is not visible while logged out, it is protected and cannot be resolved.
The file looks like a video
That is expected. X serves its GIF-style animations as silent MP4 videos. Keeping
the MP4 preserves more colour and usually takes less space; convert it only when a
destination specifically demands a .gif file.
The downloaded clip does not loop
X controls looping in its player. Other players may stop after one pass. Enable repeat in the player or duplicate the clip on an editing timeline before export.
The post was removed
A deleted post no longer supplies a public media file. The downloader cannot recover an animation after it has disappeared from the source.
Respect the person who made it
Downloading a file does not transfer ownership. Use this tool for your own posts, offline reference, or material you have permission to save. Ask before publishing somebody else's animation elsewhere, credit the original account, and prefer X's native repost or quote tools when you want the creator to receive the engagement. Can I download a GIF from X or Twitter?
